Featured Profile
As an outstanding distance runner, Florence Nabayinda has run marathons and half-marathons in many cities on three continents. Her talent has won her dozens of medals across the globe, and earned her a silver medal in the half-marathon at the World Games in 1999. Florence was even invited to the White House for her accomplishments, as a representative of her fellow athletes from Uganda.

If you met Florence, and experienced her profound gifts first-hand, you would never know that as a child her mother abandoned her, her father abused her, and her school headmaster concluded that she was useless and should drop out. All for one simple reason: because Florence is a person with mental retardation. Fortunately, Florence was introduced to Special Olympics.

Today, she is a confident woman, an accomplished athlete and an international spokesperson for Special Olympics. "Special Olympics has put me on top of the world", she says. "Far from the life I was in before I joined Special Olympics, I go for medical check-ups by leading doctors. I enjoy the best of physical fitness because I have access to the best gym facilities in Uganda...Because of Special Olympics, I am someone in society."
