Krispy Kreme and the Law Enforcement Torch Run partner to raise funds and awareness for Special Olympics

Law enforcement officers will take to the roofs of local Krispy Kreme Doughnuts, Inc., stores to raise money for Special Olympics during the first weekend of May 2009. From 6 a.m. on Friday, 1 May, to 6 p.m. on Sunday, 3 May, officers will collect donations from customers as they eat, sleep and play on the rooftops of Krispy Kreme stores.

During Cops on Doughnut Shops® weekend, police officers will collect donations from customers and the general public as they are perched on the rooftops of Krispy Kreme stores. 2009 will mark the fourth national effort by the Law Enforcement Torch Run and Krispy Kreme. Since the partnership began, US$939,000 has been raised for Special Olympics programs. In 2008, more than US$189,000 was raised through Cops on Doughnut Shops events in 36 locations.

In addition to collecting donations from customers, officers also will make calls to local individuals and business leaders asking for pledges. Many events find local community officials, sports figures and media personalities challenged to join the law enforcement personnel on the roof to contribute to the fundraising efforts, and Special Olympic Athletes are usually on hand to help greet customers and create awareness of the Special Olympics programs in the area.

Customers who donate US$5 or more to the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics will receive not only the sincere thanks of participating officers, but will also receive treats from Krispy Kreme ranging from a free doughnut to a free dozen Original Glazed doughnuts. Corporations, organizations or individuals donating US$1,000 or more will receive a free Krispy Kreme doughnut party for their employees.
